The points can be bought in 100-point increments at a rate of 3 cents per point, or $30 per 1,000 points. (minimum 1,000 points purchases). Depending on what card you have, you are subject to maximum points purchase of 100,000 points or 500,000 points per year.

It tends to be a much larger redemption compared to gift cards and merchandise rewards -- especially when it involves points-transfers to the frequent travel programs at participating airlines and partnered hotel chains.

Instead, it would be smarter to purchase Membership Rewards at the lower rate of $25 per 1,000 points and transfer them over to the SkyMiles program (Membership Rewards points transfer to the SkyMiles program at a rate of 1,000 miles per 1,000 miles.)

Additionally, Membership Rewards Points work with most domestic and international airlines, and if you do happen to use an airline they do not work with, American Express will figure out a solution to help you redeem your points for the airline of your choice.

It's important to note that American Express charges your card for the purchase of your trip, and then reimburses you for the cost. So your linked card will be charged for your purchase, then American Express will deduct the points from your account balance, and then finally will issue you a statement credit to your account.

Amazon and American Express regularly team up for these promos that unlock huge savings when using Amex Membership Rewards points toward your purchase. And best of all, you only need to use 1 Amex point to trigger the savings.

At Bankrate, we focus on the points consumers care about most: rewards, welcome offers and bonuses, APR, and overall customer experience. Any issuers discussed on our site are vetted based on the value they provide to consumers at each of these levels. At each step of the way, we fact-check ourselves to prioritize accuracy so we can continue to be here for your every next.

The American Express Membership Rewards program has long been considered one of the most valuable and flexible credit card rewards programs out there. Because of this value and flexibility, many consumers focus on earning as many American Express Membership Rewards points as possible through welcome bonuses and credit card spending.

Redemption rates for gift cards are around 1 cent per point, but they vary widely depending on the merchant. You should be able to get 1 cent in value for most major retailers and restaurants, but some merchants may only have a value of 0.7 cents or 0.8 cents. For example, you could redeem 5,000 points for a $50 gift card to Olive Garden or Gap, but those same points would only get you a $42.50 gift card for Outback Steakhouse or a $35 gift card to Best Buy.

Redeeming points for transfers to Amex airline or hotel partners is, by far, the most lucrative redemption option. According to Bankrate valuations, points earned in the American Express Membership Rewards program are worth up to 2.1 cents each toward high-value transfer partner travel.

However, it should be noted that each partner loyalty program determines the transfer ratio for points redemption. While most Amex points transfer to partner programs at a 1,000:1,000 ratio, some Amex points transfer at a different rate. For example, Amex points transfer to Aeromexico at a 1,000:1,600 ratio and to Hilton Honors at a 1,000:2,000 ratio.

It could be that, also make sure that you have an Amex that earns MR points linked to your Amazon account as a payment method. Make a couple small purchases and come back to the link in a couple days.
