How Irv Gotti and Murder Inc Shaped Hip Hop: Download the Documentary That Goes Behind the Scenes

Weeks after the Murder, Inc documentary had everyone talking, Ashanti decided to share her side of the stories Irv Gotti touted in the five-episode series. On Wednesday, October 26, Angie Martinez debuted a new episode of her In Real Life podcast featuring Ashanti. During their hour-long conversation, the beloved R&B singer asserted that she loves Murder, Inc and everyone involved. She even admit that she watched some of the doc herself. Yet, she thinks Gotti acted selfishly when he "tarnished and cheapened the brand" by throwing mud on their names. She also claimed that her former label boss "flat-out lied" about certain aspects of their backstory.

"I hate when he tells the story about 'Oh Ashanti's not loyal. She didn't support during the trial' when clearly you see me at the trial," she explained. "Clearly you see me on every single newspaper... it's just weird that you know you're and just keep lying and that's where it becomes a little scary and mental." The Glen Cove, N.Y. native is convinced that Irv tried to "ruin" her in his documentary. She doesn't deny that they had an intimate relationship at one point in time, but Ashanti provided more context to their story that doesn't appear in the series. In one clip that's gone viral, the singer revealed some of the degrading words the Murder, Inc founder "consistently" said to her. "When someone is consistently saying to you, 'You ain't s**t. F**k you," she said. "You not even f**king loyal. I made you. I made the world want to f**k you.' He would say 'n***as wanna f**k you because I made you look like that. I made you f**kable' in those exact words." Ashanti remained silent while BET aired Irv Gotti's The Murder, Inc Story back in August. While she didn't seem to be publicly fazed by it, the singer seemingly took aim at Gotti when she appeared on the remix to Diddy and Bryson Tiller's "Gotta Move On." "It's givin', obsessed, it's givin', you stressed, it's givin', you pressed," she sings on the record. "It's givin', this n***a missin' the best' (Let's go)/But it's been 20 years, n***a, please, say less/We can see all your tears while you beatin' on your chest." Business mogul and producer Irv Gotti, born Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr. has been in a number of headlines recently revealing details of his past relationship with Ashanti, the early days of his career in the music industry, and the creation of Murder, Inc. just ahead of The Murder Inc Story five-part documentary series premiere.

The documentary will not only cover the music of Murder, Inc, but also the drama surrounding the label. From feuds with Aftermath, Shady and G-Unit Records, along with the federal charges he faced, Gotti, 52 is finally ready to reveal his authorized untold story of the rise, sudden fall, and redemption of his iconic record label..

A documentary about Murder Inc. is set to arrive on BET this month. The five-part documentary will detail the rise of the label, which was founded in 1999 and became one of the most successful Hip-Hop imprints of the early aughts, with a string of hit singles from its stacked roster that included Ja Rule, Ashanti, Lloyd, Charli Baltimore, and others.

Focusing on Murder Inc.'s co-founder, Irv Gotti, the documentary will detail the label's ups and downs, including its feuds with G-Unit Records, Aftermath Records, and Shady Records, and the infamous federal charges they faced. Nas, Fat Joe, Lyor Cohen, and Charli Baltimore will make appearances while Gotti himself will narrate.

Allegedly extracted from an A&E documentary on Bugsy Siegel and the cadre of Jewish mobsters that were known as Murder Inc, Irv sought to launch his own label with seed money from Def Jam and saw the trio of Jay-Z, DMX and Ja Rule as pivotal in doing so. But while the label would soon take off, his plans to form a supergroup was thwarted as swiftly as their arrival was announced on the cover of XXL.

"We're good people -- I just wanted to drive that home today," he said. Giving a brief rundown on the origins of the label's name, he explained that he thought up the name Murder Inc. while watching a documentary on a collective of real-life hit men who went by the same name.

Gotti said his original intention with the name was to shock people and give them a catchy name to remember, but as of late, he said, "no one was looking at the talent" of his roster and people were just focusing on the negative connotations of the name. The hip-hop community understood that by using the word "murder," his artists meant they were "killing it" with their records, he said, but the mainstream media misconstrued the term. So after consulting Minister Farrakhan, the hitmaker changed the name. "My sole purpose is that everyone will focus on our talent and not our name," he remarked.

A fit young woman, Kaitlin Armstrong, 35, stands accused of killing another young woman, Anna Moriah Wilson, who was one of the best bike racers in America. In an effort to help the public understand how violence like this could occur between these two people, the Austin police have crafted a narrative about the murder. They believe two women both wanted the same man: Colin Strickland, a longtime friend of mine from the Austin cycling scene.

In 2019, back before Strickland had met Armstrong, he often worried that a deep emotional attachment could be counterproductive to his cycling ambitions. But that year, following his most successful racing season yet, he felt a renewed urgency to meet somebody he could get serious about. He downloaded the dating app Hinge, which touts itself as the anti-Tinder, geared toward singles looking for real connection instead of casual hookups. In October 2019, he found Armstrong.

This was a challenging assignment. In the weeks after the murder, reporters from around the world descended on Austin to try to understand what had happened among Wilson, Strickland, and his then girlfriend, Kaitlin Armstrong, who was accused of the murder. Wilson was dead, Armstrong was missing, and Strickland had gone into seclusion. Although sources outside the relationships seemed willing to talk, those closest to the three were reticent.

Try Episode 13, which investigates the 1981 murder of violent bully Ken McElroy(opens in a new tab) in Skidmore, Missouri. The murder remains unsolved despite taking place in broad daylight in front of dozens of witnesses. In celebration of April Fools' Day, the format of this episode is different than their normal fare but fun nonetheless. To get the full discussion as it is weekly, however, kick off with Taman Shud(opens in a new tab).

The hosts are director-and-producer team Lance and Tim, who are working on a documentary on Maura Murray, a college student who seemingly disappeared into thin air after crashing her car in New Hampshire. The public interest in this case is staggering and it has stoked an incredible amount of intense online debate.

Brand-spanking new and equipped with an impressive website, Untold is dedicated to examining the facts around the 1987 unsolved murder of Daniel Morgan. The tale, according to host British screenwriter and journalist Peter Jukes, "moves from back streets of London, through the highest echelons of Scotland Yard, to the offices of Rupert Murdoch's best selling newspapers, to the doors of Number Ten Downing Street."

The very same day he laid his mother to rest, Gotti reached out to Payton. Payton thought Gotti must be contacting him to take the documentary off YouTube. But instead, Gotti offered Payton a job opportunity that would take his career to new heights.

The weekly program, which debuted in October, serializes a single nonfiction story over one season -- like peeling an onion or scraping layers of paint down to the wood. It's already broken iTunes records for downloads and streams.

The inaugural seasonhas zeroed in on questions surrounding the January 1999 slaying of Baltimore teen Hae Min Lee and the conviction of her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed. He's serving a 30-years-to-life sentence for murder but claims someone else killed her.

Nine episodes have been released Thursday mornings so far, but nothing new this week because of Thanksgiving. Episode 10 comes oput Dec. 4. Each episode has averaged more than 1.5 million listeners, and Apple reports it has hit 5 million iTune downloads and streams faster than any other podcast.

"This is not an original idea. Maybe in podcast form it is, and trying to do it as a documentary story is really, really hard," said Koenig, the podcast's host. "But trying to do it as a serial, this is as old as Dickens."
